In Loving Memory of My Dear Uncle, Pilin Jean
My Uncle Pilin was one of a kind. To our family, he was much more than an uncle—he was a teacher, a mentor, a friend, and a source of endless stories and laughter. As I reflect on his life, I find myself smiling through the tears because of the many wonderful memories he gave me.
One of my favorite memories was when Tío Pilin and Tía Ketty invited me on a road trip to Washington. Karina, Jorge, and Peter were just little rug rats back then. We traveled with a Scamp camper—a very miniature camper, and I mean miniature! When we finally arrived at the campsite somewhere near Washington, it was freezing cold. That night we all squeezed into that tiny Scamp to sleep. The next morning, I woke up and couldn't believe my eyes. There were icicles hanging from the ceiling inside the camper. Even the door was covered with ice. It was so cold, but we couldn't stop laughing. It became one of those family memories that stays with you forever.
Another memory that always makes me smile was riding with him in his beloved blue Volkswagen Beetle with the Monza exhaust. One rainy day, he took me for a ride and entered the Cocoplum Rotonda at what felt like 60 miles per hour. Before I knew it, we were spinning around in circles, doing what seemed like five complete 360s in the rain. I remember thinking, "Oh boy, Tío is crazy!" Somehow, we made it through laughing, and it became another unforgettable adventure with him.
Beyond the fun memories, Uncle Pilin taught me skills that I still use today. He taught me how to weld copper and introduced me to the plumbing trade. I used to tag along with him while he worked, and he would patiently explain how everything worked. He loved sharing his knowledge, and he took pride in teaching others. Many of the things I know today are because of him.
Whenever I think of Tío Pilin, I hear him saying with pride, "Pilin Jean, el mejor plomero de Hialeah." It wasn't just a saying—it was who he was. He was a craftsman, a hardworking man, and someone who took pride in doing things the right way.
I will always cherish the memories of riding with him, learning from him, laughing with him, and simply being around him. He left a lasting mark on my life, and I am grateful for every moment we shared.
Rest in peace, Tío Pilin. Thank you for the lessons, the laughter, the adventures, and the love. You will always be remembered, always be missed, and always hold a special place in my heart.
Te quiero mucho, Tío. Until we meet again.
