Caridad Gonzalez's Obituary
GONZALEZ, CARIDAD, 77, born August 10, 1943, in Havana, Cuba, passed away on August 27, 2020.
Caridad fled Cuba at the age of nineteen and settled in New York City. It was in the Big Apple where she would meet her husband John. They married in 1968, and following a honeymoon trip to Miami Beach, Caridad and John moved to Miami in 1969.
Caridad stayed home to raise her two boys before working for Corpus Christi School elementary school, first as a staff member in the lunchroom and eventually as the manager of the cafeteria. After more than fifteen years with Corpus Christi, Caridad transitioned to another foodservice position, this time with Miami Springs Middle School. Caridad retired full time in 2008.
Caridad possessed a giving heart, living very modestly but always very generous with family and friends. Her passion for reading was surpassed only by her prowess in the kitchen, and you would be hard-pressed to find a better flan in all of South Florida. An avid animal lover, Caridad never hesitated to give a home to a stray. Meek, humble, and faithful, Caridad modeled her Christian faith in everything she did.
Caridad was preceded in death by her husband John Robert. She is survived by her sons Leonard [Sara] and Gilbert [Lee], brother Rolando Martinez [Josefa], sister Praxedes Blackledge [Gary], and grandchildren Natalie, Leo, Daniel, Luis, and Sara Isabel.
Visitation will be on Wednesday, September 2, 2020, from 3:00 pm to 9:00 pm at Ferdinand Funeral Home. A memorial Mass will be celebrated on Thursday, September 3, 2020, at 10:00 am at St. Augustine Catholic Church. Caridad will formally be laid to rest on Monday, September 21, 2020, at 2:00 pm at Vista Memorial Gardens Cemetery.
