Zhenmin Chen's Obituary
Zhenmin Chen was born on March 20th, 1947, in Shanghai, China. He attended primary and secondary school in Shanghai and graduated from Shanghai Normal University in Mathematics in 1982. In 1988 he immigrated to the US to attend the University of Texas – Dallas, eventually receiving his Ph.D. in Statistics in 1993. In 1994 he began a teaching and research career at Florida International University in Miami, eventually rising to full professor in the Mathematics and Statistics Department. Working at FIU for almost 26 years, his impact was felt by countless students, faculty, and administrators. Dr. Chen loved the Miami Heat, cruising around the world with his wife, and drinking coffee. He also loved shopping for gadgets with his friend Hassan, fishing, and driving his sizeable American truck while listening to Chinese Opera. Besides being a top-notch instructor and researcher, he was also an excellent woodworker, electrician, and handyman. On February 13th, 2021, he died in South Miami Hospital from complications due to stage four cancer. Dr. Zhenmin Chen’s immediate family includes his wife, Zongmei Qiu, his oldest daughter, Weiyi Chen, her husband, Major Adam Simon USMC, and his youngest daughter, Stephanie Chen (died in 1998). He will be greatly missed by many family members, colleagues, students and friends.
In lieu of flowers, a scholarship fund will be established in memory of Dr. Zhenmin Chen. Donation details will be sent out shortly.
A visitation will be held on Saturday, February 20, 2021 from 8am-9:30am with the chapel service starting promptly at 9:30am.
The burial will be held at Miami Memorial Park at 11:00am.
