Thompson, Ronald Floyd's Obituary
After a courageous battle with heart disease, Ronald F. Thompson, age 73, passed away peacefully surrounded by his loving family on Saturday, August 3, 2024, at Clevland Clinic Hospital in Port St Lucie, Florida.
Ron is survived by his wife of 54 years Rose Thompson, son Nick (Heather), daughter Holly (Greg) and 4 grandchildren, Jenna (23), Brock (20), Sabrina (12) and Beau (9).
Ron was born in Kingston, Pennsylvania, November 17,1950 to his beloved parents Floyd “Tommy” and June Thompson. Shortly after Ron’s birth, the Thompson family relocated to Miami, Florida where his father established Power Mower Sales, a multi-line dealer for Lawnmower parts and service and a future family tradition.
Ron attended Miami Springs Senior High School where he met Rose and married shortly after graduating in the summer of 1969. Ron proudly served his country in the U.S. Army from 1971-1977, subsequently extending his service for years in the Reserves. After coming back to South Florida, Ron returned to help run Power Mower Sales, continuing a second-generation and family-owned business tradition.
For those that had the pleasure to know Ron, you understood his strong will and stubbornness at times, but you also knew of his enormous heart and wonderful sense of humor. He was generous, loyal, and brave. He was clever and full to the brim with knowledge gained through all of his experiences. Ron was a hard worker and a servant to helping others.
In 2002, Ron discovered a heart condition while on a physical for Nutrisystem. Thereafter, Ron showcased tremendous strength as he endured multiple open heart surgeries to keep his body live and well.
Although he was living with heart disease, Ron never allowed his condition to hinder his passions. An avid member of the South Dade Anglers and South Florida Sport Fishermen Associations, deep sea and backcountry fishing was always on his agenda. In his later years, a love for motorcycles, especially Harley Davidson motorcycles, was evident to anyone who saw him ride with the wind. “Living on the edge”, Rose would say as he traveled cross country to infamous biker locations such as Devils Tail and the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally.
For 39 years, Homestead, Florida was their home, but in 2009, following the sale of Power Mower Sales, Ron and Rose chose to relocate to Pittsburro, North Carolina. This is where Ron continued his passion for the outdoors, including fishing and motorcycle riding, as well as a muscle car purchase to continue to showcase his wild side. On any given morning, you could catch him at Virlie’s Grill where Ron made new lifelong friendships that provided him with much fulfilment.
In 2024, encouraged by the Florida sun, Ron and Rose returned to Florida, moving to Port St. Lucie, with hopes of new beginnings and longevity of life as Ron’s health began to become a bigger challenge. In the final moments of Ron’s passing, held by hand, his family wished him off knowing we will meet him again “at the rainbow bridge”.
We welcome all who knew him to join us in celebrating the life of a man who was loved deeply and will be missed.
To commemorate his remarkable life and the memories we cherish, a viewing will be held at Branam Funeral Home (809 North Krome Ave, Homestead) on Monday, August 12th, 5-8pm preceding the burial service the following day, Tuesday, August 13th, 10am at Caballero Rivero Palms Woodlawn.
In lieu of flowers, we ask contributions to be made to UNC Cardiovascular Medicine. The family wishes to extend their heartfelt thanks for the outpouring of love and support during this time.
