Robert Clayton Bubeck's Obituary
Robert Clayton Bubeck, PhD, Captain, USNR, born on March 20th, 1937, in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania, passed away peacefully on August 30th, 2022, in Homestead, FL.
Robert Bubeck received Bachelor of Science and Philosophy Degrees from the University of Rochester and a Master of Science Degree from Pennsylvania State University in the study of geology and chemistry. Following his undergraduate education, he was commissioned an Ensign in the United States Navy, seeing action in the Cuban missile blockade of the Atlantic and further action in the Pacific. Following his time on active duty in the United States Navy, Robert continued to serve in the United State Naval Reserve, specializing in oceanography, and retired as a Captain.
In 1965 Robert completed his Master of Science Degree in geology and joined the faculty at the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland. In 1972, having completed his PhD degree in geology and chemistry, he joined the U.S. Geological Survey, California District office, working on water resource projects and problems relating to physical, chemical, geological chemical studies. He served as project chief for assigned water quality and studies related to streams, rivers, lakes and reservoirs for the western United States.
Robert retired from government service in July 1997, and he received accolades from the United States Department of the Interior, citing his exceptional scientific experience as a valued and skilled scientist earning the respect of his colleagues and fellow scientists. He was cited by the director of the United States Geological Survey, Gordon P. Eaton, for his exceptional contribution to the work of the USGS. He published several works on water pollution and was a contributing author on reports to Congress on status of the nation’s estuaries and water resources.
Bob led a life full of joy and he will be missed by all of us who loved and admired him. He is survived by his wife Miriam A. Bubeck, his brother Richard Bailey Bubeck (Donnalee), his niece Kristi Anne Bubeck, his great-nephew Jaiden Bailey Grice, stepdaughter Katia K. Gaudichet (Jean Christophe Gaudichet), stepson Peter A. Keresztes (Ozelita Keresztes), stepson Laszlo Keresztes (Gisely Costa), and step granddaughter Nayara L. Keresztes.
In lieu of flowers the family asks that donations be made to the Alzheimer’s Foundation.
