Nancy Ellen Hammiel's Obituary
Nancy Thomas Hammiel
June 29, 1943 - June 3, 2020
Nancy passed away peacefully on June 3, 2020 after a brief illness (not COVID related).
She was a bright light and a loving influence in all of our lives and to face this world without her feels terribly unbearable. She was a talented artist, a fantastic cook, a gardener, and a lover of nature and music. She loved The Florida Keys, The Everglades, and The Great Smoky Mountains. She touched many lives over the years with her kind, gentle spirit, and in all that she did at home, at work, and in the community. She was loving and kind and always ready with the right words of comfort and encouragement for anyone who needed to hear them. She was thoughtful, fun, creative, and smart. She ALWAYS knew the correct questions on Jeopardy! and she made very short work of the New York Times crossword puzzle every Sunday morning...in pen, of course!
She was retired from Miami-Dade Public Schools where she worked most notably at Miami Springs Elementary School and was affectionately known to all as “the office lady”. She also worked at John I. Smith Elementary School and Eugenia B. Thomas Elementary School.
She was above all else a loving wife, mother, sister, daughter, aunt, neighbor, and friend. She was the PERFECT Grammy to all 5 of her grandchildren whom she absolutely adored and was so very proud.
She is survived by her devoted husband, James, her daughters Linda (Dean) Burkholder, and Leslie (Jerry) Ruff, her sister Patricia Thomas and several nieces and nephews whom she loved and cherished. She was preceded in death by her son, Donald Thomas, and her mother, Mary Jo Murphy. She also leaves behind 5 adoring grandchildren, Andrea, Henry, Benjamin, Phillip, and Abigail who were the absolute lights of her life.
Services will be planned for a later date.
