Medora Krome's Obituary
Medora Krome, beloved mother and agricultural community member, died unexpectedly on March 28, 2024, in Homestead, Florida at the age of 72, from complications of pneumonia.
Medora was born on June 25, 1951 in Miami, Florida to William H. and Phoebe Krome. She graduated from Sewanee, the University of the South, in 1973 as part of the university’s first class to include women. After college, Medora began working in the family business where she learned to grow avocados and became involved with the Homestead agriculture community. She was deeply passionate about the land and became a respected leader in the industry. Everyone that knew her appreciated her many contributions to the South Dade Agricultural Community. She felt compelled to participate in South Dade issues and organizations, from the widening of Krome Avenue to the Everglades Restoration Task Force and the Florida Avocado Administrative Committee. She was particularly dedicated to the Redlands Christian Migrant Association (RCMA), a non-profit dedicated to the education of children in migrant farm working and low-income families, which her father helped found.
In her later years, Medora became an enthusiastic fisherman who loved nothing better than going out for a “day on the bay” to catch Mangrove Snapper, her favorite fish to eat. She was a lifelong dog lover and opened her home and heart to many lost dogs who found their way to her. She enjoyed growing orchids and was tickled when her friends at R.F. Orchids named one after her (Vanda Medora Krome, 2008).
She is survived by her daughter, Phoebe (Janflone); her brother, Will; her former spouse, Jeff; and her partner, Mike. She is preceded in death by her father, William H.; mother, Phoebe; and siblings Carl and Betty Ann (Perez).
A celebration of life is scheduled for Saturday, April 20, 2024, from 2:30-4:00pm at Branham Funeral Home in Homestead, Florida, with a reception to follow. All are welcome to attend and celebrate Medora’s life. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Redlands Christian Migrant Association (www.rcma.org).
