A Tribute to Aunt Mina
To my dearest aunt and godmother, Mina: May God hold you tenderly in His hands.
You were the embodiment of unconditional love for our entire family—a second mother not only to me but to all my cousins. Though many of our most cherished memories were woven years ago in the streets of New York City, from my infancy through my teenage years, time and distance never dulled the love I have for you. It remains as vibrant today as it was then.
You moved through this world with a signature style and grace, carrying a compassion and a smile that could illuminate any room. As a child, whenever you came to visit my mother, Elva, I remember the pure electricity of excitement I felt. I looked forward to those visits with such anticipation, and once you arrived, I was glued to your side like an attachment I never wanted to break.
The memories we made are etched into my heart. I can still vividly recall the day you took me to the 1964 World’s Fair in Flushing. I was only six years old, yet the wonder of that day remains clear. I cherish the echoes of our time in Astoria, filled with the energy of those legendary, "crazy" family parties that defined our youth.
On our last visit together in Miami, I remember hugging you and asking repeatedly if you remembered your nephew, Bobby. You always said "yes" with such warmth. Whether you truly remembered or were simply being the sweet, protective soul you always were—sparing my feelings with a gentle white lie—it didn't matter. The love in that "yes" was enough.
A miracle occurred on December 1st, the day you passed. At approximately 10:30 AM, I was purging my personal files for the year-end, and I unexpectedly discovered your wedding pictures. The very next day, my cousin Ileana called to share the news that you had left us at that exact same time. Finding those photos wasn't a coincidence; it was you reaching out to say goodbye.
The affection you showed us is indelible. I will forever honor you as the shining light you are.
