John Joseph McCloskey's Obituary
John Joseph McCloskey, 73, of Plainfield, Illinois passed away Sunday, March 12, 2023 at Baptist Health Mariners Hospital in Tavernier, Florida. He was born May 22, 1949 in Troy, New York.
John spent his childhood in Troy, New York, where he spent time with his cousins and aunts and uncles. He especially enjoyed playing sports growing up, most notably baseball. He joined the United States Navy in 1970 and was very proud to have served his country for the next four years during the Vietnam War. After the Navy, John spent much of his young adult life in Hoffman Estates, Illinois where he attended Northeastern Illinois University, raised his family with his ex-wife, Yvonne, and was the owner of a successful small business supplying printing needs for banks in the Chicagoland area. He was a dedicated coach to many of his children's athletic teams and carried on his love of sports into his adult life. He lived in Texas for a five-year period before resettling in Illinois in the Aurora and Plainfield area, where he lived with his loving partner of 13 years, Laurie Schwab.
John was a loving and devoted husband, father, and grandfather. His four grandchildren were his greatest joy in life, and he had a special relationship with each one. John would help a stranger in need without question or fear. He always put others' needs and happiness before his own. His friends and family will dearly miss his positive outlook on life, his strength and courage through difficult times, his laugh and sense of humor, and his ability to always show compassion and love.
John is survived by his two children, Brian (Amy) McCloskey and Kelly (Jerry) Schwartz; his four grandchildren, Ryan Schwartz, Emily Schwartz, Madeleine McCloskey, and Asher McCloskey; his partner, Laurie Schwab; his cousins, and his many nieces and nephews. John was preceded in death by his mother, Catherine McCloskey.
Visitation will be held Friday, March 31, 2023 from 10 to 11 a.m. at Our Lady of Mercy Catholic Church in Aurora, Illinois with a mass immediately following. Interment will be held privately at Abraham Lincoln National Cemetery at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in John's name to the American Diabetes Association.
