Isabel Santos' Obituary
Isabel Santos was born in Sagua de Tánamo, Cuba. She was one of 7 surviving children of Hermilio Barreda and Isabel Caballero. Her family was a family of educators, so she followed in the family business and became a teacher. She served as a principal at Juana Bastard Middle for 21 years. When she arrived to USA in exile, she worked at Mercy Hospital while attending university to revalidate her degree. She graduated from Biscayne College (St. Thomas University) in 1977. She worked as a teacher for 17 years at Miami-Dade County Public Schools, retiring from South Hialeah Elementary at the end of the century. > > During her summer vacations, she would travel with her dear husband Ramon throughout the United States and also joined by their daughter Gemma as she would attend conferences and trainings to develop her teaching profession. Ramon and Isabel also enjoyed dancing and spending time with their very large social circle. The couple never spent many days separated ever since they got married after a short 3 week engagement period. > > Isabel is preceded in death by her daughter Ana Celia Santos and her siblings: Arminda Driggs, Alcibiades Barreda, Ana Celia Barreda, Gumersindo Barreda, Carmen Luisa Barreda, Nicolás Barreda and Emilia González. She is survived by her husband of 64 years, 8 months and 12 days Ramon and her daughter Gemma Isabel (Jose Carrillo) and many nieces, nephews, friends and colleagues. In lieu of of flowers, family requests donations to St Jude’s Children Hospital.
