Franco Portillo's Obituary
Franco Portillo passed away on October 13, 2022, at the age of 72, after a courageous battle with cancer, surrounded by loved ones who will continue to honor his legacy by living their lives to the fullest. His battle with cancer showed his courage in facing life challenges with a smile. Despite the pain, Franco came out a hero and always stayed strong. He was known to be the life of every party and for always having an interesting story to tell about cochlear implants, history, or one of his travel adventures. To say that Franco was known and loved everywhere he went is truly an understatement.
Franco was born to Luis Portillo and Rosa Corado on April 5, 1950, in El Salvador, and at the age of 16, moved to the United States to follow his dreams. Franco completed his Bachelor’s degree at the University of Southern California. Upon graduation, Franco worked as a research and development engineer at the House Ear Institute for almost 16 years. Following this research role, Franco then worked as an area manager for Advanced Bionics for over 12 years and as a director of international operations for MED-EL for about 10 years. During both of these experiences, Franco worked in implementation and sales of implantable cochlear systems, design testing, and neurological stimulation devices in the operating room. While working, Franco went back to school to complete a PhD degree in Bio-Engineering from the University of Wexford. Franco shared a passion for cochlear implants and helping individuals in need of these throughout the world over the years.
Franco is survived by his wife, Marlene; his children, Jason, Frances and Anamaria; his sisters, Marta and Marcia, his brother, Jorge; his grandchildren and many other family members and friends from all over the world.
The family would like to thank the UMiami Sylvester Cancer Center and Kindred Hospice for their compassionate care. The family would also like to thank all of our family and friends for their support and prayers, specifically Marta, Marcia, Gloria, Guillermo, and Jason, who spent time with Franco prior to his passing and made him feel very loved.
Celebration of life to be scheduled at a later date. Please reach out directly to the family for details.
