I knew Elias for over half my life, and he played a distinct part in it: When I was starting out as a consultant, he was my very first client. That’s no small matter. But we also developed a real intellectual companionship. Elias was an avid and well-read student of history. He enjoyed informed and thoughtful discussions about politics and strategy, ranging from antiquity to the present day.
Elias had particular esteem for Marcus Aurelius, the philosophical Roman Emperor whose perspectives and meditations on life clearly informed his own. So, at this moment of passage, one of the stoic’s reflections seems especially appropriate… “Don’t behave as if you are destined to live forever. What’s fated hangs over you. As long you live and while you can, become good now.”
