My sister Debbie was born in New York City on October 28, 1960. My mom was convinced she was having a boy and had everything engraved with the letter “D,” fully expecting to name her Daniel. To her surprise, another beautiful girl arrived instead. While still in the hospital, my mom saw a magazine with Debbie Reynolds on the cover, and that is how my sister received her name.
Growing up in New York, my mom often dressed us alike, and we even shared a room. We were inseparable. Some of my happiest memories are from those years, and throughout our lives, no matter the distance or time, we were always there for one another. The bond we shared was deep, constant, and filled with love.
Debbie had a heart full of passions. She loved Australia and koala bears and she was thrilled to fulfill her dream of visiting Australia. She cherished her years at Miami Aerospace Academy and the lifelong friendships she made there, even working tirelessly years later to organize a meaningful reunion. She was deeply proud of our Cuban heritage and always dreamed of visiting Cuba to see where our parents came from and to connect with family still there. Debbie was also 100% Republican and proud, never shy about standing firm in her beliefs.
She adored her many pets, especially Pitusa and Jamoncito, and was a devoted animal advocate. Debbie dedicated her life to caring for others as a nurse, a teacher, and ultimately as our parents’ loving caregiver. Her faith was strong, and she loved Jesus deeply, sharing many of the same values and convictions as Him.
Debbie had an enormous love for family. She adored her first nephew and godson, Danny, and treasured time with Kristy. She delighted in being Tía Abuela Debbie to Noah and Amelia, embracing that role with joy and pride. She also loved to cook, crochet, tried her hand at piano, enjoyed time at the shooting range, celebrated holidays with enthusiasm, and loved traveling especially to Disney World. Mickey Mouse always held a special place in her heart.
Debbie lived with passion, loyalty, and love. She leaves behind a legacy of kindness, strength, faith, and unforgettable memories. Though she is no longer with us, her spirit remains woven into our lives in our laughter, our traditions, and our hearts. We will carry her love with us always, until the day we meet again.
I will truly miss you Derby. But I know you are finally reunited with mami, papi, and your pets.
Love you always my baby sis, Beany
