Carlos Zayas' Obituary
On Tuesday, December 22, 2020, Carlos Zayas, a loving husband, father of two, and brother passed away at the young age of 72 years.
Carlos, was born on November 11, 1948 in Havana, Cuba to Carlos Manuel Zayas and Marina Farias. He lived the first twelve years of his life in Cuba where he enjoyed a great childhood. In 1961, he came to Miami under Operation Peter Pan. He attended school at Miami Senior High, class of 1967.
In 1968, Carlos enlisted in the U.S. Army serving 41 honorable years where he was involved in numerous operations and specialties to include the Army’s Special Forces where he rose to the coveted rank of Sergeant Major. He became a Master Parachutist and received the National defense Service Medal with a Bronze Star.
Between his Military career Carlos joined the Hialeah Police Department, where he served in numerous positions to include Patrol Officer, Detective, Motorman, Motor Sergeant, and Road Patrol Sergeant. He was awarded numerous awards to include a Combat Service award and the Purple Heart. Sgt. Major as he became known to most of the Police Department, was loved by the community and his peers, dedicating 30 years of service to the citizens of Hialeah.
Sergeant Major had a passion for fishing, cooking, and riding his Harley Davidson. He was extremely generous with everyone, loved music and had a passion for doing things “his way”. Carlos was a teacher and leader to many, had an infectious smile and a compassionate spirit.
He is survived by his wife Jenny, His two daughters Denise and Clarice, his sister Zurama and several cousins, nieces and nephews.
