Bennett Louis Orr, a beloved figure in Marathon, Florida, passed away, leaving behind a legacy of dedication, love, and a life well lived. Bennett was born in Philadelphia on March 6, 1934, and his
journey was nothing short of remarkable. Bennett proudly served his country in the US Army during
the Korean War. After his military service, he embarked on a new chapter of his life, finding love and companionship with Linda Orr. God blessed them with two wonderful children, Lisa and Michael. Bennett's adventures led him to the serene shores of Marathon in the Florida Keys, where he wholeheartedly embraced a career as a commercial fisherman.
Life took Bennett in new directions, and after parting ways with Linda, he crossed paths with Becky Day. Their love story blossomed, and in May of 1977, Bennett and Becky united in marriage, becoming an inseparable couple who journeyed through life together until Bennett's recent passing.
Bennett's dedication to his profession and his friends knew no bounds. He was tireless in his efforts to make a difference in his community. One of his most significant contributions was as one of the earliest organizers of the world-famous Marathon Seafood Festival. His leadership extended as he served as the President of the Offshore Fishermen of Florida. Bennett's commitment and passion touched the lives of many, leaving an indelible mark on the community he cherished.
Bennett Orr is survived by his loving wife, Becky Day Orr of Marathon, FL; brother Sidney Orr, CA; Children Lisa Donnelly and her husband Ted Donnelly of Santa Cruz, CA; Michael Orr of Hickory, NC; grandchildren Christopher Orr of Marathon, FL; Emily Donnelly Sieck and husband Max Sieck of Los Angeles, CA; Olivia Donnelly of San Fransico, CA; nieces and nephews Gerri Ricci of Philadelphia, PA; Randi Kanas of Philadelphia, PA; Marci Kanas Kaloustian of Philadelphia, PA; Christian Day of Banner Elk, NC; Michelle Day Russell and her husband Tony Russell of Pompano Beach, FL; Alex Day and his wife Samantha Day of Auburn, AL; great-grandchildren Christopher Orr of Homestead, FL; Elijah Orr of GA; god-daughters Carolyn Hayes Yearby of Homestead, FL; and Meredith Brand of Atlanta, GA. All of which will
forever hold his memory close to their hearts.
Bennett's presence, kindness, and unwavering dedication were cherished by all who had the privilege of knowing him. His memory will continue to inspire and uplift those whose lives he touched. As we mourn his passing, we also celebrate the remarkable life of Bennett Louis Orr, a man who left an enduring legacy of love and devotion to his family, friends, and community. He will be dearly missed, and his memory will live on in the hearts of all who were fortunate enough to have known him.
In a poignant farewell on December 1st, Bennett's ashes will be released to the sea during a brief ceremony led by Pastor Nick Vaughn and his wife Megan. To honor his memory and the bonds he shared with countless friends and neighbors, a Celebration of Life will take place at the Marathon Seafood Festival on March 9th and 10th, where everyone is encouraged to share favorite photos, tall tales, and memories of the exceptional life of Bennett.
