Abel Chavez's Obituary
Our beloved patriarch, husband, brother, father, uncle, grandfather, great grandfather, and friend passed away peacefully into the hands of Jesus Christ on October 31, 2021, at 97 years of age, in Redland, Florida, surrounded by the love of his family.
“Papi” was born in Guayaquil, Ecuador on June 11, 1924. He came to the United State from Guayaquil, Ecuador in 1944 seeking the American Dream of opportunity. In New York City, his first job was at Murray & Lanman Cologne factory and within six months he joined the United States Air Force, served in the Korean War, and in 1967 he retired after 23 years of service, where the family settled in Homestead, Florida. With his entrepreneurial spirit, he opened a Hess Gas Station on US 1 where he was known by the Homestead Community. In addition, “Papi” invested in other business ventures in the community.
“Papi” is survived by his loving wife of 67 years, Lucinda Kittyle Chavez, his children: Maria K. Chavez, Kathy Treem, Abel Chavez Jr., Lisa Boone, Lucy Ann Chavez, and Colleen Sandra May, 16 grandchildren,11 great-grandchildren, and 6 siblings.
First came the Lord, then his family, and helping others with known and unknown acts of kindness. If you asked how he was doing? He would say, “Better than yesterday”, “Mejor Que Ayer” and we know he is better today.
The Memorial service will be on Saturday, November 6th at 3:00 PM followed by fellowship afterward at 19470 SW 264 Street, Homestead, Florida.
